Abandoned cart message

An abandoned cart message goes to a customer who picked items, then stopped before paying. On WhatsApp that might be an online checkout left half done, or a chat where someone asked the price, said "ok let me think" and went quiet. The trap is treating it like an ad. A pushy chaser in someone's personal chat gets you blocked or reported. Only send it if the customer agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. This page gives three stages (a first nudge within hours, a question-led follow-up, a last call), versions for payment failures and quotes, and Bahasa Malaysia copies.

When to send it

Send the first message a few hours after the cart is left, during waking hours. Send the follow-up the next day, and the last call two or three days later. Stop the moment they buy, reply "no", or ask you to stop. Use the same chat they ordered from or opted in on. A fresh number they've never seen gets ignored or blocked.

1. First nudge, a few hours later

Use for a checkout left on your website. Name the item so it's clearly about them.

You → customer
Hi [Name], you left [2 x Linen shirt, M] in your cart at [shop name]. Here's the link if you still want them: [cart link]

2. First nudge after a WhatsApp chat

Use when they asked the price in chat, then went quiet.

You → customer
Hi [Name], just checking back on the [3-seater sofa, grey] you asked about yesterday. Still [RM1,890] with free delivery in [Klang Valley]. Any questions, just ask.

3. Holding the item

Use for one-off or limited items, and only if you are truly holding it.

You → customer
Hi [Name], I've kept the [vintage Seiko, blue dial] aside for you until [6pm tomorrow]. After that it goes back on the shelf. Let me know either way.

4. Question-led follow-up

Use the next day if the nudge got no reply. Ask, don't push.

You → customer
Hi [Name], was something unclear with the order? Sizing, delivery fee or timing? Happy to sort it out.

5. Sizing or fit question

Use for clothing and shoes, where size doubt is the usual reason people stop.

You → customer
Not sure M or L
The [Linen shirt] runs a bit loose. If you're usually M in [Uniqlo], M will fit. Exchanges are free within [7 days] too.

6. Delivery fee was the problem

Use when they mention the shipping cost, or you suspect it.

You → customer
Hi [Name], delivery to [Penang] is [RM12], or free if you collect from [our Bangsar shop]. Would pickup work?

7. Payment didn't go through

Use when the payment gateway shows a failed attempt. Lead with the problem, not the sale.

You → customer
Hi [Name], looks like your payment for order [#2087] didn't go through. Nothing was charged. You can retry here: [pay-link], or pay by DuitNow to [account].

8. Quote sent, no reply

Use for a quote to a business buyer or a contractor job.

You → customer
Hi [Name], following up on quote [#Q-318] for [40 ctn A4 paper]. The price holds until [31 Oct]. Want me to book it in for [next week's] delivery?

9. Last call

Use two or three days after the follow-up. Final, short, easy to say no to.

You → customer
Hi [Name], last message from me about this. Your cart is here if you want it: [cart link]. If not, no worries at all.

10. They said not now

Use when they reply no. Close politely and stop.

You → customer
Maybe next month
No problem [Name], thanks for letting me know. I won't chase. Message me anytime.

What not to send

  • "Hurry, only 2 left!" when you have 200. Customers check, and fake scarcity costs you trust for every later order.
  • A discount code in the first message. It trains buyers to abandon carts and wait.
  • A message to someone who never opted in. It reads as spam and invites a block or report.
  • Reminders after they've said no. That turns a "maybe next month" into a never.
  • "Dear valued customer". If you can't name them and the item, don't send it.

Stop typing these by hand

Cupbots runs on your own WhatsApp number. It takes orders, sends invoices with a pay-link and answers "any update?" in the chats you already use, so messages like these go out on time without you.

FAQ

Can I send an abandoned cart message on WhatsApp without permission?

Only message customers who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp, for example by ticking a box at checkout or by chatting with you first. A cold message from a number they don't know feels like spam, and WhatsApp lets them block or report you in one tap. Too many reports can get your number restricted.

How soon should I send the first abandoned cart message?

Within a few hours, while they still remember what they picked. Not within minutes: they may still be comparing prices or waiting for a partner to agree. If the cart was left late at night, wait until the next morning rather than buzzing their phone at 1am.

How many reminders should I send?

Three at most: a nudge, a question, a last call. Space them a day or more apart after the first. If they reply "not now", stop, and thank them. Anything past three reads as nagging and costs you the next sale.

Should I offer a discount in the first message?

No. A discount up front teaches customers to leave carts on purpose and wait for a code. Ask what stopped them first. Often it is delivery fees, a size question or a failed payment, and fixing that is cheaper than a discount.
